DON-WANEY IN THE MIDDLE

The General Officer Commanding the Division, Major General Enonbong Udoh while displaying the corpses of Don Waney alongside two of his gang leaders to Journalist at the Division's Headquarters in Port Harcourt on Sunday said the deceased was tracked down at his new acquired residence in Enugu.

He said the deceased and his gangs were responsible for the new year attack in Omoku community where scores of persons were killed.

He said Don Waney's second in command, Ikechukwu Adiele who he said led the gang of killers that massacred innocent residents of Omoku on the new year were among those that were shot dead by the combine team of Army and DSS.

He said the Division in collaboration with DSS and Army had redoubled their efforts to apprehend Waney following the directive given by President Muhammadu Buhari that those responsible for Omoku killings should be apprehended.

He said the notorious bandit had reallocated to Enugu where he rented apartment and had been mixing up with the neighbourhood, saying that the deceased were tracked down with the assistance of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army.

He said when the troops invaded Waney's residence, he tried to engaged them but were gunned down by combine team.

The Spokesman of the Division , Col. Aminu Eliyazu had earlier in a press statement said the gallant Soldiers and DSS invaded the new Enugu resident of Waney and shot him alongside his two gang members.

"The authorities of 6 Division Nigerian Army Port Harcourt wish to inform the peace loving people of Omoku in ONELGA in particular, Rivers State and indeed the entire good people of Niger Delta in general that the notorious cult leader, kidnap kingpin and mass murderer Don Waney is dead"

"Recall that in the early hours of Monday 20th November 2017, troops of 6 Division Nigerian Army acting on credible information from some patriotic members of the public raided the evil Don Waney enclave in Omoku, ONELGA Rivers State where shocking discoveries of assorted weapons, dynamites, bags of suspected cannabis, full military camouflage uniforms, military boots, military communication radios, 10 human skulls and human bones were discovered"

"Additionally, in continuation of the operation on Tuesday 21st November 2017, the troops also exhumed decomposing bodies of some of his victims in his shrine in the glaring eyes of the media who were invited to witness first hand"

"Perhaps not satisfied with the numerous lives of innocent citizens he took, Don Waney masterminded the despicable New Year day mayhem in Omoku in which he led his notorious gang of criminals to murder 23 peace loving citizens of Omoku when they were returning from Cross Over Service at about 1:30am on Monday 1st January 2018," Eliyazu had stated earlier in his press statement.

He said intense surveillance activities on him and his gang by the Department of State Services (DSS) Rivers State Command revealed that after committing the atrocities, he relocated to a neighbourhood within Enugu Town in Enugu State where he rented an apartment and started living among unsuspecting neighbours within the community.

"From the relative safety of his newly-rented apartment, Don Waney was already perfecting plans to wrought another mayhem in Omoku in which he was to attack churches, schools, Army and Police locations and the residence of the generality of the already traumatized people of Omoku"

"However, following his successful geo-location to his new Enugu neighbourhood hideout by the DSS Rivers State Command, a combined team of troops of 82 Division Nigerian Army Enugu and personnel of DSS Rivers State Command raided the hideout to arrest him and his other accomplices"

"Incidentally on sensing that the combine team were closing in on his residence, Don Waney, his Second- in- Command (Ikechukwu Adiele) and another gang member (Lucky Ode) attempted to escape through the back exit of the apartment and were shot down by the eagle eyed troops in the process. One of them died on the spot while the other 2 who sustained gun shot wounds eventually died while being evacuated for medical attention," he added.

Buhari's 2019 Bid taking shape

Following the reported nomination of Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, by President Muhammadu Buhari to chair his re-election campaign, Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, has provided yet another clear indication that the president is preparing the grounds for his announcement to run, as he briefed Buhari of a new South-West campaign organization to be inaugurated on January 20.
A ThisDay report had earlier claimed that Amaechi had been appointed as director-general of Buhari’s 2019 campaign, a role he played for then candidate Buhari towards the 2015 election.
Speaking Wednesday, Shittu revealed the new organization as ‘Buhari/Osinbajo Dynamic Support Group’, and disclosed that he had been appointed the national chairman of its board of trustees.
He spoke in an interview with state house correspondents after meeting with Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja.
Shittu said it was part of effort to get the president to run, noting that Buhari’s supporters would prevail on him to seek re-election.

He said they would “help Buhari to make up his mind so that Nigeria can continue to enjoy stability and progress”.
“It goes without saying. I mean if you have a child who goes to primary school and he does well, he proceeds to secondary school and he does well, and you keep asking if he will be going to university. It goes without saying.
“By the grace of God, we his (Buhari’s) ardent supporters who appreciate his worth on behalf of millions of Nigerians would urge him to re-contest.
“I know he has not made up his mind but I can say that some of us can assist him in making up his mind so that Nigeria can continue to enjoy stability and progress in our land.”
Asked if the development was proof that campaign for 2019 had started, the minister said, “Every day since he (Buhari) came into office, all his activities are geared towards letting Nigerians know that they have a saviour, a rescuer, somebody who is committed to providing relief for Nigerians in all respect,” he said.
“In the area of fighting corruption, insurgency whether in the north-east or the Niger Delta; in the area of repairing the economy and providing jobs and providing social stability in the society.
“You will agree with me that today but for Buhari, Boko Haram would have invaded even Lagos.”

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to “urgently explain to Nigerians why the government decided to withdraw the sum of $1 billion from the Excess Crude Account to fight Boko Haram insurgency in the North East, if his government is to avoid the intense secrecy and lack of accountability and oversight of the spending on Boko Haram that characterised the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.” The money was approved by the governors during a meeting last Friday of the
National Economic Council (NEC) presided over by Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

In a statement today by SERAP deputy director Timothy Adewale, the organization said: “Nigerians should have some sense of what it is the government is doing in our name, especially against the background of the declaration by the authorities that the anti-insurgency war has ended and the Boko Haram terror group defeated, as well as the unresolved questions on how over $2bn was spent by former Jonathan administration to fight Boko Haram. The government also ought to tell Nigerians whether and how the legal requirements for approving the extra-budgetary allocations were met.” The organization said that, “As a government presumably pursuing a change-agenda, Buhari should do things differently from the former Jonathan administration including by proactively engaging the Nigerian people in an honest conversation about the fight against Boko Haram and the use of the public funds so far invested to prosecute it.”

The statement read in part: “The Nigerian people do not have sufficient information at hand to evaluate, much less influence, the government’s policies, strategies and funding to end Boko Haram insurgency. Nigerians need to know the level of success that has been recorded against Boko Haram, and the security situation in the North-east, as well as the amount of public funds that have been invested to combat terrorism.” “The success of Nigerian constitutional democracy ultimately depends upon an informed citizenry. The government should therefore emphasise transparency over secrecy on the spending on Boko Haram. Buhari should keep Nigerians up-to-date about what he’s doing to end Boko Haram, including by explaining why $1bn is needed at this time to fight the insurgency.” “Indeed, the health of our democracy depends upon the government’s willingness to ensure that the policies and programs it pursues in the interest of national security are truly relevant and effective in keeping us safe.” “The vitality of citizens’ check on governmental powers, especially on the spending of our commonwealth, depends upon the availability of information.

The citizens need to know about governmental actions and policies in order to exercise their checking power including at the polls. The only effective restraint upon executive policy and power may lie in an enlightened citizenry.” “Transparency in the spending on Boko Haram would also have an indirect effect on other branches in the sense of setting an example and changing the background tone of government. Such disclosure helps to ensure government’s adherence to the rule of law and promote confidence in the lawfulness of governmental action.” “Since the start of the Boko Haram insurgency, Nigeria defence and security budgets have increased significantly yet there has been no resolution of the conflict; and troops in the front line have reportedly complained of lack of military equipment and resources to fight Boko Haram insurgents and restore full security. For instance, in 2014 about N340billion (US$1.7billion) was allocated to the military. Funds allocated to the military was the largest in Nigeria’s federal budget in 2014.” “In October 2014, the National Assembly approved a request to borrow US$1billion as an additional amount for purchase of military equipment. In 2015, about N375billion (US$1.8billion) was allocated to the military in the federal budget. In 2015, an interim report of the presidential investigations committee on arms procurement under the Jonathan administration revealed an extra-budgetary spending to the tune of N643.8 billion and an additional spending of about $2.1 billion under the Jonathan administration.” “The investigation indicated that about $2.1 billion was inexplicably disbursed into the office of the National Security Adviser in procurement of arms to fight Boko Haram insurgency, but was not spent for the purpose for which the money was disbursed.” “The lack of transparency and accountability in military spending, during the administration of former president Jonathan, has led to the inability of the military to adequately protect people against the violation of their rights by Boko Haram in the northeast of Nigeria.” “The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which Nigeria is a key member, has accountability, economic and social justice and popular participation in development as part of the fundamental principles in the Revised Treaty ECOWAS. In a similar way, the Charter of the Commonwealth, which Nigeria is also a member, has as its core principles mutual respect, inclusiveness, transparency, accountability, legitimacy, and responsiveness.” “Article 1(c) of the UN Convention Against Corruption states the purpose of the treaty to include the promotion of integrity, accountability and proper management of public affairs and public property. As a state party to the Convention, Nigeria is obliged to take appropriate measures to promote transparency and accountability in the management of public finances.” “Some persons alleged to have embezzled funds meant for the fight against Boko Haram insurgents are currently being prosecuted while other people are being investigated. It is important for the government to accelerate this process by ensuring that the investigation and prosecution of all persons alleged to have embezzled our commonwealth is not delayed.” “A speedy prosecution will serve as a deterrent and ensure that Nigerians, particularly those in the northeast whose human rights have been violated, are not denied justice and reparation.

The government should provide all investigating and prosecuting agencies with adequate funding and manpower required for speedy investigation and prosecution of corruption linked to the fight against Boko Haram.”

An Uber driver has been arrested over the murder of a British embassy worker in Lebanon, whose body was found strangled and dumped at the side of a highway.
Rebecca Dykes, 30, who had been working for the Department of International Development, was discovered dead on Saturday by the side of a highway leading out of the capital.
A postmortem suggested she had been been strangled and police sources told the Telegraph she had been sexually assaulted.
The man, identified only as Tarek H, was arrested at 3am on Monday morning, according to security sources.
Miss Dykes, from London, had been out at a bar on Friday night for the farewell party of an embassy colleague in the central Gemmayzeh neighbourhood of the city.

She left with a friend before midnight, telling others she had an early flight home to catch for Christmas.
The Lebanese driver picked her up from Gemmayzeh and then drove to the nearby Achrafiyeh neighborhood where she lived, but did not drop her off there.
Police traced the suspect's licence plate through surveillance cameras on the highway, where he dumped the body around 4am,  Lebanese news agency NNA reported.
The suspect has a criminal record, but it is not known if he was picking Miss Dykes up in his capacity as an Uber passenger or not.
Security sources say the murder does not appear to be politically motivated.

Miss Dykes had been working in Beirut as the programme and policy manager for the Department for International Development since January this year.
Friends say she was quiet and "bright". “She hadn’t been in Beirut for long, she was just finding her feet. I can’t believe it,” one told the Telegraph.
She had worked for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office since 2010, previously on Libya and Iraq.
She is thought to have grown up in Hong Kong, but attended Malvern St James Girls boarding school in Worcestershire before later studying anthropology at Manchester University and International Security and Global Governance from Birkbeck, University of London.
In a statement her family said: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Rebecca. We are doing all we can to understand what happened."
Hugo Shorter, the British ambassador to Lebanon, said: "The whole embassy is deeply shocked, saddened by this news. My thoughts are with Becky’s family, friends and colleagues for their tragic loss.
"We're providing consular support to her family and working very closely with Lebanese authorities who are conducting police investigation."
Miss Dykes' death has shocked the small expat community in Beirut.
Lebanon is a relatively safe place for foreigners, and has been mostly calm since the end of the bloody 15-year civil war in 1990.

Serie A champions Juventus are reportedly hot on the trail of Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin.
Bellerin has started every Premier League for the Gunners this season, having been the subject of intense transfer speculation throughout the summer as Barcelona eyed a move for the Spaniard.
However, TuttoMercatoWeb now claims that Juve have entered the race for the 22-year-old.
The Italian giants lost Dani Alves last summer and have not yet replaced the Brazil international, prompting them to move for Bellerin.

There has been speculation that the Gunners star was looking for a fresh challenge, having been at Arsenal since 2011, but that was more likely to be a return to Spain than a move elsewhere.
However, should Juve come calling it could prove difficult for Bellrin to turn down – particuarly with the future of undre-pressure Gunners boss Arsene Wenger up in the air and the club set to lose their two highest profile names in Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

LAGOS—Former Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mrs Farida Waziri, said weekend that the decision of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, to set up special courts for trial of corruption cases has vindicated her and laud the CJN for initiatives aimed at strengthening the war against graft in the country.

The former EFCC boss had repeatedly called for creation of special courts during her stint at the anti-graft agency.

Farida Waziri

Fielding questions from journalists in Lagos, Waziri said she was particularly happy with the CJN for considering the option of setting up special courts to handle corruption cases, stressing that this bold move had, indeed, vindicated her on the crusade she started as chairman of EFCC.

She said:  “The CJN is a man after my heart because great minds think alike. Finally, a Daniel has come to judgement. I remember when I began the call for special courts, I went round the leadership of the judiciary and NBA then, I took advantage of every opportunity I had to justify the need for it but many of my adversaries kicked against it because they were desperate for my downfall but I’m glad some of them have joined the crusade today.”

Responding to a question on her reaction to the shocking revelations on the volume of sleaze under the immediate past administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, the former EFCC boss said:  “I’m only glad that those things didn’t happen under my watch as EFCC chairman because it would have been too traumatic for me. And that is why If I see ex President Jonathan today, I will kneel down to thank him for the honour done me by removing me as EFCC chairman at the time he did.

“My first strong premonition of what was ahead was when I began the probe of the monumental oil subsidy fraud going on then. I came to Lagos on a vital intelligence on the subsidy scam and as soon as I arrested a key culprit, I got a call from the presidential villa asking me to release the suspect, because according to their words ‘he is our person’, but I refused to let him off and days after I was removed from office.”

On her assessment of the current leadership of the EFCC, she said:  “There is no doubt Magu is doing his best within the available space but as I always say, the battle is beyond an individual or an organization.

‘’Every patriotic Nigerian concerned about the future of this great country must support the war, buy into it and take ownership of it because it’s about our collective survival.

‘’One thing going for the present leadership of the commission is the personal support of President Muhammadu Buhari, which is unquantifiable and I appreciate Mr President for this.”

Court
An Ado-Ekiti Customary Court, ‎on Thursday, dissolved a 16-year-old marriage between Mr Emmanuel Jegede and his wife, Olubunmi, both clergymen.
The marriage was dissolved on the grounds of threat to life, provocation, stubbornness, lies and adultery.
The petitioner, Mr Emmanuel Jegede, 41, a clergyman, resident at Irewumi quarters, opposite Bawa Estate, Ado-Ekiti, told the court that the respondent was arrogant, lazy, stubborn and unsupportive.
He explained that the respondent, who gave birth to three children for him, was not willing to work to assist him in taking care of the children’s welfare.

Emmanuel said that she was the only one responsible for the family upkeep including the education of the children.
The petitioner, therefore, pleaded with the court to separate them and award the custody of his three children to him for proper care.
The parties have since January, 2016, stopped living together, as the petitioner had remarried ‎a new wife.
The respondent, Mrs Olubunmi Jegede, 39, a prophetess, trader and resident at No 31, Ifesowapo q‎uarters, off Nova road, Ado-Ekiti, denied all the allegations leveled against her.
She alleged that the petitioner was an adulterous man and that in 2008 alone, he committed adultery with five women in their church.
The respondent added that she even caught more women with the petitioner in their parish

The mother of three children told the court that for two years, the petitioner abandoned her and the children.
She said the petitioner preferred to drink beer to stupor and smoke cigarette instead of taking good care of her and the children.
Olubunmi said she was responsible for the school fees of their second child, Elizabeth, 6, since 2015 to date.
She consented to the decision of the petitioner that the court should dissolve their marriage.
The respondent, however prayed the court to award the custody of her three children to her for proper care.
The president of the court, Mrs Olayinka Akomolede, observed that the marriage had broken down irretrievably and consequently dissolved the marriage.
She awarded ‎the custody of the three children to the respondent for proper care.
Akomolede ruled that the petitioner would be paying N2, 500 as feeding allowance on each of the three children, beginning on or before Nov. 30 through the court registry.
She further ruled that the petitioner would be responsible for the education of the children at all levels.
However, the court granted the petitioner, unrestricted access to his children between the hours of 8a.m. and 6p.m.
